Watch out for Microsoft Instant Messaging
From October 11, 2004 Newsletter
If you use Microsoft's Instant Messaging, you should know that there is
a new worm out there "in the wild" that is propagating via this
facility. See Techweb: http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/49900742 for
an article on this outbreak.
The current worm is fairly low on the threat level as it "only" points
you at some Chinese porn sites - but if history is any indication the
fact that the current version does anything means that someone else will
subvert it even farther to do something truly nasty.
As an aside and in the vein of the first part of this newsletter, the use of "public" instant messaging is a potential (and very real) security and privacy hole in any business. There are programs available which will create private and encrypted IM facilities that you may use with complete safety if you must converse via the Internet about business matters.
Keep it safe and secure out there
