Another week, another problem
From August 30, 2004 newsletterAlong with the normal dump-truck load of general viruses that attack Windows systems comes this latest which is just different enough that it warrants special mention:
For those of you who use WINAMP to listen to your MP3s or other audio,
there is an exploit "out there in the wild" that can enter your machine
through the mechanism used to add new "skins" (the graphical look and
feel) for the program.
This is a critical problem for version 3.x and 5.04. If you click on a
link in an e-mail or on a web page that links to a malicious file with
the ".wsz" extension (the one used for Winamp skin files) the file is
silently downloaded to your system if you are using Internet Explorer
(why aren't you using Mozilla? www.mozilla.org for the latest)
You should update immediately to Winamp version 5.05 at www.winamp.com
